Before I take an idea and start building & testing a prototype for a new product, I write and file one or more provisional patent applications to protect it. Obviously, you wouldn't build a house on land without a deed; the patent application is the first step toward creating that deed. As development and testing continue, you strengthen the patent/deed by filing more provisional applications.
I am standing inside my Flexwave Grain Silo invention (partially filled with corn) during the full-scale testing phase of this new product in Assumption, IL.
.
Once I have an idea in mind, I continue my work by researching prior art, including patents and products already on the market.
Early in the process, once I am convinced that my idea is patentable and commercially viable, I file the first provisional patent application.
This is my favorite part of the process, and the more mistakes and failures, the better; it's the only way to fully develop the invention.
